Renegade Dentist Back on the Warpath...Nara Says, "Let Teeth Heal Themselves"
August 21, 2004 -- "We were promoting an unrecognized 'specialty' called Oramedics, which was our specific prevention methodology," says Nara. "We were showing people how, if they took proper care of their teeth and gums - and looked at the whole process differently than they had been, well, they'd be able to get through life with very little or no professional intervention. Now, if you look in the phone books, the dentists are ALL promoting 'prevention' - but the profession still thrives on repair work, so where's the 'prevention'?"
Dr. Nara published the books, 'Money by the Mouthful' and 'How to Become Dentally Self Sufficient' in the late seventies and early eighties. They went into several printings until Nara and his wife, Ruth, retired in 1986. "We still get letters from people all over the world looking for help with their particular situations," says Nara, "they get ahold of a one of the books and get fired up to do something about it!"
That's a common reaction from Nara's readers. One reader decided to take it a step further.
In the late 1990s, Tom Cornwell was trying to get ahold of the Nara's to get some materials for a friend having some pain and decay issues. "I located a phone number for the Nara's and spoke with them at length about the Oramedics program I'd done back in 1980," said Cornwell. "When I leaned that they'd retired, I suggested they put their materials up on the internet. They asked if I had the capability to do so and I told them I did. A week later, boxes and boxes of Bob's works began showing up on my porch!"
Cornwell began scanning and re-publishing various articles and interviews covering oral health and prevention, then began the OraMedia site for Dental Self Sufficiency. "It generated immediate interest," says Cornwell. "Queries from all over the world began pouring in. I tried my best to keep everything intact and up to date," adds Cornwell, "but I'm finding that not much has changed. The materials are just as valid now as they were back when they were written - if folks want to save their teeth and gums and keep them healthy and even reverse the decay process - well, there's a lot of good material here, all backed by science." The site even offers a variety of recipes for homemade toothpastes, powders and rinses.
Other important reseach, which Nara pointed out 30 years ago, revealed the relationship between gum disease and heart disease or diabetes. According to Cornwell, "The science was there at the time, but it was new and largely ignored. Now you see something in the papers practically weekly."
Was Nara ahead of his time?
Not according to Nara, who claims that the cause and cure for tooth and gum disease was written about over 200 years ago by Levy Parmly. "If Parmly had had the internet back then, dentistry as we know it might be a thing of the past," say Nara. "Now with Tom in the picture, we're out of the stands more often again, trying to move the ball further up the field. We know that when people know the truth about this disease process, they take responsibility for it."
